The Massachusetts Employer Survey (MES) collects information about employer-sponsored insurance in Massachusetts. It is sponsored by the Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA), an agency of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
The Massachusetts Employer Survey (MES) is a study of employer-sponsored health insurance in Massachusetts. The survey asks about employee demographics, insurance types offered by employers, employee eligibility and enrollment, employer and employee contribution amounts (cost sharing), and employer decision-making on plan offerings.
The survey can be completed in one of two ways:
1. Online, by accessing the survey using the button below.
2. Mail, by emailing email@example.com and requesting a mailed paper copy.
Most Massachusetts residents receive health insurance from their own employer or a family member’s. Employers shape consumer choice by selecting health insurance plans available to employees. As such, evaluating the role of employers in the health insurance marketplace is critical to understanding access to insurance. Your response informs business and state policy decisions around employee access to and the cost of health insurance coverage in Massachusetts.
The Massachusetts Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) manages this study. This state agency is responsible for providing information to business community and state government policymakers, concerning employer-sponsored health insurance coverage. CHIA’s vision is a transparent health care system where reliable information provides common ground for improvement and empowers people and organizations to make informed decisions.
CHIA is working with Market Decisions Research (MDR) to conduct this study. MDR is an independent research firm located in Portland, Maine. They have conducted similar health insurance studies in several states. MDR is staffed by a team of professional interviewers that respect your time and privacy.
The survey asks about employee demographics, employer insurance offerings, employee eligibility and enrollment, employer and employee contribution amounts, and employer decision-making on plan offerings. Much of the information you will need to answer questions is included in the Summary of Benefits and Coverage provided by your insurance carrier(s). All your answers are private. Information will not link to you, your firm, or your employees.
The survey is confidential. That means your name, position, telephone number, and all other personal and business information will be private. MDR collects the survey information and then removes all identifying information before sending aggregated data summaries to CHIA. Researchers will never link you, your firm, or your firm’s employees to your answers.
MDR researchers randomly selected your firm from a list of employers in Massachusetts. Your job title was identified as being responsible for providing health insurance benefits to employees. We legally obtained all contact names, contact phone numbers, and contact email addresses.
The study will reach out to nearly 4,000 firms in Massachusetts of various sizes within the private sector. We hope to reach a wide variety of firms to get a balanced picture of employer-sponsored health insurance in Massachusetts. We hope the firms we contact will participate in the study.
Possibly. We use a random selection of firms to ensure we have information from all sizes of firms in Massachusetts. Your colleague’s firm may be on this list, but there is no guarantee. If your colleague strongly wants to participate, he or she should contact MDR’s lead researcher, Brian Robertson, PhD., at firstname.lastname@example.org.
CHIA will use the study results to measure how many employers provide health insurance in Massachusetts, the characteristics of employees by firm, how many employees are eligible and enroll, how much employers and employees contribute toward premiums, and employer decision-making on insurance offerings. CHIA will make the MES study results publicly available on their website (http://www.chiamass.gov/massachusetts-employer-survey/). Policymakers will use this information to help guide Massachusetts’ health care system.
